The Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phonology (DEAP) is a widely used standardised assessment that helps Speech Pathologists better understand a child’s speech development. We are excited to share 5 stages of Speech Development from the age 3 through to 6 years and 11 months.

Find your child’s age bracket below:

3 years – 3 years and 5 months

Children in this age group should have all sounds except for:

/sh/ for ‘sheep’

/z/ that makes a ‘zh’ sound for example, ‘treasure’, ‘leisure’.

/ch/ for ‘chair’

/j/ for ‘jump’

/th/ (voiceless) for ‘think’

/th/ (voiced) for ‘that’

/r/ for ‘rabbit’

 

3 years and 6 months – 3 years and 11 months

Children in this age group should have all of their sounds except for:

/sh/ for ‘sheep’

/z/ that makes a ‘zh’ sound for example, ‘treasure’, ‘leisure’.

/j/ for ‘jump’

/th/ (voiceless) for ‘think’

/th/ (voiced) for ‘that’

/r/ for ‘rabbit’

4 years – 4 years and 11 months

Children in this age group should have all sounds except for:

/sh/ for ‘sheep’

/th/ (voiceless) for ‘think’

/th/ (voiced) for ‘that’

/r/ for ‘rabbit’

5 years – 5 years and 11 months

Children in this age group should have all sounds except for:/th/ (voiceless) for ‘think’

/th/ (voiced) for ‘that’

/r/ for ‘rabbit’

6 years – 6 years and 11 months

Children in this age group should have all sounds except for:

/th/ (voiceless) for ‘think’

/th/ (voiced) for ‘that’
